We worked with Berkeley Rand to develop a brand strategy for their design and engineering house that creates unique experiential marine-based expeditions for their Superyacht clients.

Berkeley Rand is a boutique design and engineering house that specialises in creating ultra-bespoke, off-grid expeditions for the superyacht industry. They essentially bridge the gap between high-end luxury maritime travel and hardcore scientific/geographic exploration. Here is a breakdown of what they do:

Experiential Engineering

They don’t just plan trips; they “engineer” experiences. This involves using state-of-the-art technology (including Immersive AI) to design adventures in the world’s most remote locations, such as the Arctic, Antarctic, South Atlantic archipelagos, and the South Pacific.

Off-Grid Tech & Navigation

As engineers, they focus on the technical requirements of “off-grid” travel. This means preparing superyachts and their crews to navigate safely and efficiently in “the rand” (a historical nautical term for the edge of the known world), where traditional infrastructure doesn’t exist.

To harmonise raw ecological roots with technical precision, we focused on translating Reselo’s forest-born origins into a forward-thinking brand. By capturing the team’s vision, we built a visual and verbal identity that feels as credible as the science behind it.

Our strategic goal for the Berkeley Rand brand was to capture the intersection of high-end maritime engineering and the raw, untamed spirit of off-grid exploration. Recognising that their audience demands both absolute technical reliability and peerless luxury, we set out to create an online presence. The strategy centred on a minimalist yet immersive digital environment, utilising expansive, high-fidelity imagery and atmospheric motion. By prioritising a clean, architectural layout and a sophisticated narrative flow, we ensured the platform reflects their role not just as travel planners, but as Experiential Engineers. Every digital touchpoint was crafted to build trust in their technical expertise while igniting the sense of wonder essential to a once-in-a-lifetime expedition.

STARTING FROM SCRATCH

The Brand Foundation: The Luxury of Science

We began by defining the brand’s core tension: The Luxury of Science. To articulate this, we engineered a typographic system that bridges two worlds, pairing high-contrast serifs—evoking maritime heritage and prestige—with clean, geometric sans-serifs that reflect modern technical precision. This duality ensures the brand feels both historically grounded and future-ready.

A Kinetic Visual Language

Because Berkeley Rand “engineers experiences,” the visual identity needed to feel active and exploratory rather than static. We developed a secondary design layer to reinforce this “living” brand:

  • Topographic Overlays: We integrated subtle map contours into the backgrounds, providing a sense of geographical depth and a constant reminder of the physical journey.
  • Technical Callouts: Using hairline strokes and coordinate data points to frame photography, we created a “viewfinder” effect. This gives the user the sensation of looking through a high-tech navigational instrument, positioning every image as a piece of curated intelligence rather than just a photograph.

FINDING THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE

Through deep-dive immersions with the founders, we identified that Berkeley Rand’s true offering isn’t travel; it is calculated risk-taking. Our strategic challenge lay in bridging two disparate worlds: the bespoke, high-touch service of the superyacht industry and the raw, clinical rigour of a scientific research vessel. We shifted the design focus from the traditional yacht owner to the ‘Explorer-Visionary’, an individual who has exhausted conventional luxury and is now seeking the ‘Final Frontier.’ This psychological mapping directly informed our ‘Viewfinder’ aesthetic, transforming the brand into a specialised instrument for discovery rather than a mere service provider.

To articulate Berkeley Rand’s unique market position, we engineered a design framework that harmonises understated elegance with technical authority. From the core verbal identity to the digital interface, every touchpoint was meticulously crafted to embody their vision for pioneering, off-grid technology. The result is a brand presence that transcends mere service description. It serves as an invitation to a new era of purposeful maritime exploration and environmental stewardship

GIVING IT A FACE

With the strategic roadmap as our foundation, we pivoted to the visual narrative. In close collaboration with the Berkeley Rand team, we translated complex engineering concepts into a sophisticated logomark.

PUT THE PUZZLE TOGETHER

Information Architecture & UX Mapping

Before any visuals are created, we define the “Mission Flow.” We map out how a user moves from initial curiosity to deep technical interest. This involves organising complex expedition data into a hierarchy that feels intuitive rather than overwhelming.

Wireframing Phase

We move into low-fidelity wireframes to establish the “Viewfinder” layout. During this stage, we focus on the spatial relationship between expansive imagery and technical data. 

Setting the Visual System

Instead of designing full pages, we start with a Style Tile. This is where we lock in the “Abyssal” colour palette, the glacier-sharp typography, and the custom iconography. 

High-Fidelity Prototyping

Once the style is set, we build out the high-fidelity designs. This is where the brand truly comes to life. We apply the topographic overlays and coordinate callouts to photography. 

Interaction and Motion Design

A static UI isn’t enough for a brand that “engineers experiences.” We layer in motion triggers fluid page transitions that mimic the movement of the tide and subtle “hover” states that provide immediate haptic-style feedback. These interactions reinforce the feeling of a premium, custom-built digital tool.

 

Front-end development and deployment

Once the design was set, we focused on the technical build. We ran extensive tests across all devices to make sure the experience was smooth and consistent everywhere. With a solid, high-performing foundation ready, we officially launched the new platform.
